First, there are many discounts offered based on the individual’s age category. Some discounts are specifically for senior citizens, in most cases considered that if they are age 65 or older. Many of these discounts go towards Personal Injury Protection coverage for senior citizens. One more specific discount, Allstate’s “55 and Retired Discount,” provides lower rates to those who are retired and not employed on a full-time basis. On the other hand, many insurance providers also offer student discounts for drivers currently enrolled in a university and under the age of either 21 or 25, depending on the policy.
Many insurance providers apply discounts to individuals who own vehicles that have certain safety features. A common discount is for vehicles with front and/or side airbags. In additional, cars equipped with factory-installed and approved motorized seatbelts will often receive further discounts, which usually apply towards Personal Injury Protection or medical cost coverage in case of an accident. Many vehicles which have an anti-theft system can receive discounts; for example, up to 25% off with GEICO’s Anti-Theft System Discount. This usually only applies in certain states, though. In addition, cars with anti-lock brakes are considered much safer and often are eligible for discounts on auto insurance premiums.
Other discounts are for the specific type of vehicle covered under the insurance policy. Individuals who purchase a new car are often eligible for discounts depending on the year and model of the vehicle and the state in which the vehicle is insured. Some other discounts depend on what the vehicle will be used for. For example, trucks used for utility purposes may be eligible for discounts. Economy cars may also receive some discounts, depending on the insurance provider.
Many insurance companies will also provide discounts to organizations who are affiliated with them. A few phone calls to various organizations that you are a part of could lead to you finding a very cheap auto insurance rate. Other professional groups such as the federal government or graduate education programs may also receive discounts depending on the state and insurance provider. In addition, hybrid cars often are eligible for discounts on insurance coverage due to the economical nature of the vehicle.
There are still many other ways to receive a discount on auto insurance coverage. Individuals who insure multiple cars with the same insurance provider are often eligible for discounts on the second and third vehicles, and so on. In addition, those who renew coverage under the same provider are often eligible for renewal discounts. Individuals who have a driving history of no accidents usually can receive some type of discount, depending on provider.
There are also several ways to improve your opportunities of receiving a discount if you aren’t already eligible for one. Good students meeting a certain GPA requirement who elect to take a new driver education course will often receive discounts through their insurance provider. Also, both young and old drivers alike can sign up for defensive driving courses, typically offered through insurance companies or driving schools, which may make them eligible for discounts upon successful completion of the course.
Clearly, there are many ways to receive discounts on auto insurance policies, depending on the type of vehicle, age of the driver, or other factors such as driving education courses.
