When considering travel insurance, you not only need to look at the amount of medical cover that may need to be provided for, but also at the costs that may be incurred when a family member needs to stay while you are receiving treatment, and the costs incurred by repatriation. The amount of cover you need to take out depends on your chosen destination. Some countries have much better healthcare than others and so you may need repatriation from one, while being able to safely receive treatment in another.
You will also need to calculate what is a reasonable amount of cover to expect for your given destination. Many countries now have healthcare agreements with the UK entitling you to free or subsidised healthcare costs there, but many do not.
For this reason, countries within the European Economic Area will require less insurance cover than countries outside of the EEA. As a general rule, a policy of 1 million GBP is recommended for travel within the EEA and 2 million GBP for travel without.
When choosing an insurance policy, make sure to look for a policy that covers twenty-four hour emergency service. Some insurers will not cover you for emergencies outside of working hours, so look out or this exclusion.
Those who have any current medical conditions should also always let their insurer know about this before purchasing a policy. If you do not declare an existing condition, then your cover may be null and void when you come to need it.
Another point to note is that if you have a pre-existing medical condition, then you should always make your insurer aware of this fact. Cover for those with pre-existing conditions is available from a variety of insurers, and you can also try specialist insurance brokers.
